Sant'Anna Website Style Guide

About this Project

One of my weekly tasks was to review, edit, and make suggestions for the Sant'Anna Institute website. I found that creating a style guide helped organize the edits I was making, so I could ensure the structure and style were consistent across all pages of the website. I transformed my simple notes into an official style guide for future Sant'Anna employees and interns.

I have navigated various style guides in copy editing positions for Elon News Network and my internship with The Borgen Project, but I officially learned how to follow a specific style guide in my Publishing and Editing I class. Throughout this course, I edited my peers' work with the Chicago Manual of Style. This class and past editing experiences prepared me to edit Sant'Anna's website for consistency, grammar, and word choice.

Editing for Sant'Anna was a unique experience because I was editing the work of the Italian faculty. Suggesting changes due to mistranslations or cultural differences helped me understand more about communication with Italians and cross-cultural differences. For example, an edit I suggested was to change "LBGTQA+" to "LGBTQIA+" in the ally statement because this second acronym is more familiar to many American students who may consider attending Sant'Anna. Also, including intersex is important so as not to accidentally leave anyone out. Prospective students may misinterpret the original acronym as the institute not being aware of intersex and, therefore, maybe not being as inclusive as stated. Suggesting these edits also allowed me to focus on a familiar target audience of American college students.
